CALCULATED FICTION
MATH WORKSHOP 8
November 13, 2007
Work on this workshop in
groups of 3 or 4, constituted as you like.
We only have one hour for
this workshop, so please stay focused.
I:
GOING OVER THE HOMEWORK
Once again.
II: NON-EUCLIDEAN
GEOMETRY
ACTIVITY
1. Do
Excursion Exercises 1-6 from the Excursion on pages 542-544 of ME. Come get the necessary materials from
one of the grownups.
III: EUCLIDEAN
GEOMETRY
ACTIVITY
2. As
a group, try to find a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. (Hint: focus on drawing useful diagrams.) If that doesnÕt pan out, come get some
diagrams from Brian/Steven/Taiyo that suggest proofs of the Pythagorean
Theorem; work with your group to understand the arguments suggested by those
diagrams. Write down at least one
of those proofs in your own words, presumably with accompanying diagram.
IV:
EXAM PREP
ThereÕs no time for this
in workshop today, but of course you should still prepare for tomorrowÕs math exam. I recommend, as before, that you help
each other study.
Between today and
tomorrow you can get help at the QuaSRC and from Brian via e-mail.
THE
WRITE-UP
No write-up is due this week on account of the math exam. Study study study! And of course your work from this workshop goes into your portfolio.
