On page 44, Freedberg says of scientific observation with plant leaves, "And so Ferrari has to adopt some other approach. Texture, for a start, will no longer do. 'Now,' he declares, 'in order to examine the very fine natural roughness of the petals, we were not content solely to use our hands; and so, to make it capable of being minutely investigated with the eyes, we applied the Lincean explorer, that is to say, the microscope, a small viewing glass enclosed in a tube." This is a prime example of an attempt to expand science and it's findings through technology. In today's modernly scientific world, we have such innovations as the Hubble Telescope and Cat Scans. How do our discoveries innovations, and desires to expand compare to those of yesterday and the Lincean explorer?
