To the Evergreen Community
The results of the Spring Competition for the 2007-2008 Benjamin A.
Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship Program have recently been
announced. I am delighted to inform you that of the 25 Evergreen
students who applied for support for winter or spring study abroad, 12
students have been offered awards and 1 student was selected as an
alternate.
The 12 Evergreen students received awards totaling to $54,500 in
scholarships to apply toward their study abroad costs for Evergreen
programs, learning contracts, internship contracts, and consortium
partnerships during winter and spring quarters. Individual awards
ranged from $2000 to $8000, with 7 students receiving the maximum of
$5000, and one student who received the maximum plus an additional
$3000 for critical language study of Arabic. The Gilman Awards
have truly made it possible for many deserving Evergreen students to
fulfill dreams of studying abroad that might not have been possible
otherwise.
Nationally Gilman received 1369 applications for the spring cycle for a
total of 400 available awards. Evergreen students comprised 2% of
the applicant pool and 3% of the recipient pool and are to be commended
for their thoughtful, purposeful study abroad planning, which no doubt
contributes to the attractiveness of their proposals. In the Fall
2007 cycle, 6 students applied and 2 were selected, for a total of 14
recipients for the academic year – an exceptionally high number for a
school of 4300 given that many schools only have one or two recipients.
Please congratulate the following students on their success, and thank
the many players who supported them in the process: The Writing Center,
KEY Student Services, First Peoples, Financial Aid, Registration and
Records, Academic Advising, Supporting Faculty, Student Families,
Academic Deans, and International Programs, to name a few.

Subject: Study Abroad Scholarships for Winter-Spring
Hello All,
Below is a link to a flyer that advertises the Benjamin Gilman
Scholarships for Study Abroad. Many of your students in the 07-08
programs will likely be eligible to apply for their winter or spring
quarter study abroad, but the application deadline falls on October 9,
2007, very soon after the start of fall quarter. Many academic
program students miss this deadline because they learn of it too late.
I hope you will print out this flyer and the attachment which lists the
actual timeline for applications and bring copies to the Academic Fair
on Wed, the 16th. I will also bring some copies to distribute to
your tables, but there’s always the chance we won’t connect.
Please let me know if you have questions, and remind students that I
and other advisors are available to assist them with the application
process over the summer, especially their statement of purpose essay.
Last year we were second in the nation in numbers of students awarded
Gilmans, 15 recipients, beat only by Berkeley with 16, and we have a
whole heck of a lot fewer students overall than they do!
