Ten pushups for Robert RauschenbergOne- We learned that adding subtraction to work is productive. Two- Understanding that any newspaper anywhere would ‘blow yer head’; he put them in his work. Three- You’re entitled to not think about his work. It’s not possible to take what you don’t want. Four- He may be the only artist that can be forgiven for his productivity. He worked a lot and that’s fine. Five- Adding objects to his canvases you see relationships; you don’t worry about them. Six- For the first time what changed in art is in the work. Seven- Was the distinction between ‘art’ and ‘life’ an issue for Rauschenberg? No, but not because there wasn’t one. Eight- Theory and such around his work is a joy. Nine- A spirit in his work is there for sure. If it’s his spirit or not we don’t know. Ten- Popularly collected. Eleven: will be missed. -corwin peck
