The major goal of this program is to link theory and practice. Students will have opportunities to understand abstract theories by applying them to projects and activities and by putting them into practice in real-world situations. This three-quarter program involves learning psychological and sociological perspectives in fall quarter, applying them to field work in winter quarter, and returning to the classroom in spring quarter to assess what worked and to suggest future improvements. Students who enroll in this program must commit to remaining for the entire year.

During fall quarter, students will study psychological and sociological perspectives on identity, society, social problems and human service work. Students will examine questions such as where do I fit within my community? How does my society influence me? How can I have a positive impact on my community and society? Students will explore the reciprocal relationship between self and community through program readings, class activities and fieldwork exercises.

Welcome to spring quarter!

EVALUATION WEEK ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Kiva update: the four entrepreneurs we initially chose to loan to have all been fully funded! I've chosen four more entrepreneurs, and our program loaned $25 to each, plus a $10 donation to kiva to cover their operating costs. Here are the folks we have supported through our loans:
At Khin, a 62 year-old silk weaver from Cambodia with 9 children.
Saodat Qalbarova from Tajikistan. She's a 44 year-old farmer with 5 children whose wheat harvest failed last year due to weather. The loan will help pay her rent.

The books for our spring program will be available at the Evergreen bookstore. Be sure to get the correct edition of the texts by buying them at the bookstore or by checking the ISBN at the bookstore before buying the books elsewhere. The ISBNs listed are the ones we ordered, but occasionally different ones arrive.

WEEK 9 ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hi, everyone! We're almost done! Here are some friendly reminders to help us finish the business of the quarter. See also the week 8 announcements for info on spring quarter. We won't be attending the Academic Fair this week, but are available to answer any questions you have about next quarter.

Process seminar and potluck next week (Tuesday, March 11 from 12-3) in Sem. 2, C1107.
Field supervisor evaluation letter due via email by end of next week.
Service learning process paper #2 due next Tuesday at noon.
Self-evaluation due to faculty via email by Thursday, March 13.
Contact your faculty to arrange an evaluation conference during evaluation week. Your should bring your evaluation of your faculty to your conference.

Left Foot Organics volunteer opportunity

"We are in need of some help on Wednesday and Thursday coming this winter with supporting our growers. This support can be half-day commitment 9-12 or a full day commitment 9-3. This position would involve students supporting a grower with autism with composting chores on Wednesday, supporting a grower with Down syndrome with harvesting and other farm related task. This is great opportunity for students to see a full functioning farm and help serve their community members. We are in desperate need right now and need all the support we can get this winter."
