South Bend, Washington

Located in Pacific County

South Bend is the county seat. The county seat used to be Oysterville until the late 1800's when it changed to South Bend. South Bend is known as the Oyster Capital of the World. in 1875 the first post office was established, thus officially recognizing the town of South Bend.[4] Many visitors make a point of visiting the historic Pacific County Courthouse which was built in 1910. Highway 101 runs through this small cozy town with a population of approximately 1785, as of July 2008.

Entertainment

There are many outdoor activities to participate in here in South Bend. Fishing, boating, hunting, hiking, water-skiing, and kayaking to name just a few.

The Mill Pond is a juvenile fishing pond that is stocked with trout in the Spring each year. In order to enjoy the fishing at Mill Pond you must be 14 years or younger or be disabled.

Dining Out

You can enjoy some great food at the new Hamps 101 restaurant for lunch only though. Mexican food with wonderful artwork designed furniture can be found at the El Compadre restaurant, and Chen's restaurant offers great Chinese food.

Education

Although the sign coming into South Bend states that it is a wonderful place to retire, it is also a safe and wonderful place to raise your children as well. Chauncey Davis Elementary is right next door to the South Bend Junior High and High School. Across the street you will find the Early Learning Center for the preschool age children.

City Government

The City of South Bend operates under a mayor-council form of government[1]. The current Mayor is Kirk Church. There are five City Council members, they are: Patricia Neve, Jerry Bowman, Cheryl Seals, Karla Webber, and Robert (Bob) Hall.[2]

National Historic Site

The Pacific County Courthouse, located in South Bend, is listed as a National Historic Site. The Courthouse has been listed as a National Historic Site since 1977 because of its architectural significance.[3]
