HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Habitat for Humanity of Grays Harbor is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged. Habitat for Humanity of Grays Harbor seeks to sponsor projects in human habitat development starting with the construction of modest but adequate housing, and to associate with other groups functioning with consistent purposes.

Volunteers are an integral part of the Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Grays Harbor County. We welcome all people as we join together to build simple, decent, affordable houses for families in need in our community. Volunteers serve in many more functions than the construction of homes. Volunteers are needed to help locate buildable lots, select and support partner families, raise funds to build homes, increase awareness of Habitat for Humanity in the community, and provide clerical support. All of these volunteer positions are extremely important to the ultimate goal of building homes for families in need. Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - "sweat equity" - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Skilled and unskilled construction volunteers are welcome. Building takes place from 9:00am to 3:00pm Tuesday through Saturday throughout the year. For more information on the current building site, contact to Habitat for Humanity office at: (360) 533-8090.

REBUILDING TOGETHER

REBUILDING TOGETHER GRAYS HARBOR

If the roof begins to leak, the furnace quits, or broken locks on doors and windows leave elderly residents vulnerable to crime, a quick turn-around is essential. Many of America's 24 million low-income homeowners don't have the money or ability to repair damage that could spiral into ever more costly and hazardous dilapidation. Nearly half of Rebuilding Together's nearly 300 affiliates now make repairs all year long for low-income homeowners whose repairs just can't wait for Rebuilding Day. While that single spring day's nationwide rehabilitation blitz remains a vital part of the organization, its impact is increasingly sustained by consistent, continuing involvement of Rebuilding Together volunteers. Spring, summer, fall, and winter--they provide weatherization services, home modifications for the handicapped and elderly, and urgent repairs. Grays Harbor County is working toward becoming one of the year-round affiliates.
