Ties are one individual's level of connection with another individual. The strength of the interpersonal tie should be the combination of the amount of time, the emotional intensity, the intimacy (mutual confiding), and the reciprocal services which characterize the tie. Most of us can agree, on a rough intuitive basis, whether a given tie is strong, weak, or absent. (pg. 1361)
