Rawls begins defining the basic structure of society by comparing agreements poeple accept vs. agreements originally made, the latter describing the basic structure of society. "They are the principles that free and rational persons concerned to further their own interests would accept in an initial position of equality as defining the fundamental terms of their association" It is the foundations that are referred to when setting up a government and creating additional laws. It is the "basic" structure because it is the most primitive state of a community.
