Suburbanization is the spread of people out of the main concentrated areas of the city into the outlying areas on the periphery. Traditionally, for the past fifty years or so, this has pertained to people who work in the city and commute via automobile to the suburbs, (which are supposed to be a compromise between living in the city and being out in the country). Suburbanization was one of the factors suspected in America's declining social capital, but was deemed insufficient of explaining the issue, due to the fact that the overall drop in social involvement in America was not confined strictly to the suburbs.
