Conviviality is the concept that all of the people in one’s life form a kind of mosaic that illustrates and/or defines who that person is. It’s all about bonding and sharing, fully experiencing life’s ups and downs with those around you. This means in part sharing life’s rituals and rites of passage, big things like weddings and funerals. More pointedly it entails the everyday little stuff in life; this is why people feel so comfortable at a favorite neighborhood tavern, for instance.

When it comes to community networks on the Internet, conviviality plays a major role. A sort of virtual Third Place becomes possible whereby people can feel free to be themselves, or in the particular case of the Internet, whomever they wish to be perceived as. Conviviality is habitual, it feels welcoming. A good virtual Third Place would feel like that; a place where one could go to express his/her thoughts and opinions. Conviviality is something that cannot be forced; one must feel free to interact of one’s own accord. The more people feel at home in these communities, the more likely they are to frequent them.
