There are two basic ingredients of practices such as those listed here or the thousands of others which might have been listed in- stead. It is the combination of these two ingredients which give to these practices the potential for revitalizing public life. The two elements are: 1) a central concern with value, with standards of excellence, with what is good; and 2) a rigorous objectivity. What these practices promise (and what, in fact, nothing else can provide) is the kind of experience which would enable us to identify and build upon common ground. (Kemmis pg. 74)
