Introduction; The Library as Space & Portal

It is clear that the definition of "library" is changing. The expectations and habits of patrons have brought significant changes in information access; public search engines like Google, online databases and social networking are connecting individuals to each other and to content in myriad new ways. In libraries, patrons are able to access information formerly available only through print books and journals. An exhaustive amount of material already exists detailing emerging technology, changing readerships, and the zeitgeist of the information age usurping anything once physical; in short, the prevailing attitude is that libraries are going to be predominately virtual.

I will focus on the Evergreen State College's Collection Development as a branch of the library that must respond to changes in information distribution and technology and provide an overview of available options for increasing the breadth and depth of Evergreen collections.
