My last conversation with Jacinta is worth noting. Last week, in the final throes of evaluation, she dropped by Tacoma, as she had with some frequency the last few weeks. She an Kabby tried to convince this congenitally left-footed 58-year old bumbler that I could still learn how to dance. And you know what? She had me convinced. What a teacher; what an inspiration; what a loss. Like so many others, I was initially stunned and now reluctantly accept that she will no longer be walking and working among us. Ironically, she seemed especially happy lately. I don't know when we met, perhaps sometime in the early nineties, when I first arrived at Evergreen (I feel as though I've known her since day one). I do recall the last time we spoke: at the end of my meeting with the folks from Great Falls University a couple of weeks ago. Just as we were wrapping up, Jacinta floated in on her angel's wings, and without speaking, handed each one of them an Evergreen pen, each pen wrapped with a ribbon. Outside the room she apologized for "barging in." I told her there is no need to apologize for being thoughtful and generous. We exchanged smiles; hers of course, was far more radiant than mine, and we parted, alas, for the final time in this realm. When I first joined the deanery and returned to campus in July, she gave me an extensive tour of the COM Building, complete with herbal tea served in a china cup and saucer. Along the way, we sat in the theatre and talked at length about our lives as humans, artists and Greeners. Being Jacinta, the next day she sent ME a thank-you card. She did likewise (served me tea) when I came to the COM Building for a program visit. I greatly appreciated her gestures and kindness, but now realize more than ever what a marvelous human being she was. I just hope, as others have expressed, that more of us will emulate Jacinta's example of heartfelt hospitality, generosity and community-mindedness. --Eddy
