I am writing to invoke anyone with a lawn. There are many ways one can support a more sustainable lifestyle, including the food we eat, the businesses we support and even the plants that grow in the front yard. There is no reason every home owner shouldn’t attempt to grow plants with a purpose. Think about the vegetables that could be grown in place of the monotonous sod that carpets the property of most homes and the water that is sprinkled on to support its growth. It is time to put that water to better use by planting edibles rather than grass. If making a garden in your yard is too much try planting native plants that have evolved to survive naturally during the hot summer months without the water hose. As well as saving water one can also save plenty of cash by reducing there water and electric bills.

Let’s work as a community to bring awareness to all about the need to conserve and be wiser with our resources. There is a lot of information in the book Food Not Lawns by Heather C. Flores for anyone interested. Help to recreate the natural ecosystems that existed before your home was built and get creative with native plants.
