WRITING EXPECTATIONS

Expect to do lots of reading and writing!

We'll expect you to write strong academic essays, as well as some papers that are not essays.

Approximately every other week, we'll be writing formal essays. A formal essay has a thesis statement and several supporting arguments. In these papers, we want you always to underline or italicize or boldface your thesis statement, to put it right up front before the reader.

If you aren't familiar with this sort of essay-writing, you'll need to work with our writing tutor:

In the weeks when we're not writing essays, we'll write in different modes - paraphrasing passages from Shakespeare; creating adaptations in modern language, etc.

A short version of the first five writing assignments appears in the syllabus. In the week before the assignment is due, we'll clarify the assignment (either in class or in writing).
