Begin your research paper by talking to friends about what broad categories interest you (rainforest people, shamanism, music and ecology, wood carving, storytelling). Then think about selecting a more specific topic and begin cruising the Library for sources: books, articles, recordings, internet information, whatever. It is useful to be broad-based at first because you may have difficulty finding sources.

10/12 10 – 12:30: Rick Bartow discussion and workshop

1:30 - 5: Workshops

10/13 9 – 12:30: Workshops

Hand back in the sources that you don’t think you’ll be able to use for your research paper; start reading your usable sources in earnest. Keep track of what you read by taking notes (and don’t forget to note the author, date, and page number for each reference).

Week Four: The Artist as Anthropologist

10/19 10 – 12:30: Kathy Glowen discussion and workshop

1:30 - 5: Workshops

10/20 9 – 12:30: Workshops

Assignment for next week: Healing Sounds of the Malaysian Rainforest. Prepare a 1 – 2 page typed response paper for seminar. Attend the public performance by renowned Turkish musician Latif Bolat on Friday the 23rd at 8 pm in the Recital Hall of the Com Building. On Saturday morning, Mr. Bolat will give a free public workshop between 10 and 12 in the Experimental Theater of the Com Building. Continue exploring sources for your research paper; continue taking notes. More than anything else, start forming some kind of theoretical premise for your work: are you focusing on colonialism? Gender? Spirituality? Modernization? Fine-tune your note-taking to correspond with your theoretical focus.

Week Five: The Arts and Spirituality

10/26 10 – 12:30: Latif Bolat discussion and workshop

1:30 - 5: Workshops

10/27 9 – 12:30: Workshops

Assignment for next week: Intimate Nature (pp. 167 – 241); also reread Liz Woody’s article in the same book; The Lure of the Local (pp. 123 – 192). Prepare a 1 – 2 page typed response paper for seminar. Start working on your rough draft for your paper, starting with the very easiest section first.

Assignment for next week: A Short Guide to Writing About Art (pp. 104 – 212); Intimate Nature (pp. 313 - 358). Create an outline of your research paper (typed); bring it to seminar on Tuesday. If you know what you’ll be planning to do, then it shouldn’t be too much trouble to write it down.
