Arts, Environment and the Child: Walking the Wheel of the Seasons

Project Reflections

Date Place Reflections
10/1 Harvest Festival I had a wonderful time and the luminary project is one that I plan on doing for the children at the daycare I work at. It gave me an oppurtunity to get to know the students in the class better.
10/24 Black Lake Today was my first day volunteering. I am volunteering in Mrs. Mould's kindergarten classroom. When I first entered all the kids were coloring. At 9:00 a.m. the children gather into a circle around Mrs. Mould- they discuss what day it is, what the date is and sing the alphabet. The children are working on the sounds of letters and when Mrs. Mould teaches them the sound she also shows them how to sign the letter in sign language. The children sat for a little over an hour which to me seems like an incredibly long time to expect children to sit still at that age. I was impressed with how much they sing. They sing the alphabet, the days of the week, and a song that relates to the book read.
10/25 Meeting Quick meeting about Roosevelt Elementary- went over work party dates. Most importantly got to meet the other volunteers involved at Roosevelt.
10/28 Meeting I met with Beth this morning to go over grant writing. I really want to start working on grant writing but in all honesty I thought that I would be watching and researching first but I will actually be writing one. I'm sure it's good to just jump in but I am incredibly nervous because I have never taken a grant writing class before.
10/29 Roosevelt Work Party- fun!! it was nice to be working in the garden finally. I showed up a little early and started working on digging out a line to put the wood beams in for the plant bed. After the beam was in I helped spread soil in preparation for Wednesday recess planting with the kids.
10/31 Black Lake Same routine as the first day.
11/5 Roosevelt Work Party- today it was cold and started to rain. The focus for today was to work along the fence line clearing away the weeds. I sat cutting cardboard that will be layed down with beauty bark on top to prevent weed growth to keep with the pesticide free school. After cutting a lot of cardboard I helped to spread beauty bark and haul away the weeds to the dumpster.
11/7 Black Lake After Recess the children had their first day of their new reading program. The children had been tested before hand to see what reading group they would be placed into. The teachers call the little books the children read out of magazines and I was wondering to myself if this is to get the children more interested in reading. I didn't ask, I should have. The magazines are comprised of pictures for the words so instead of trying to sound out words the children know the pictures and can just say them. The teacher worked with the kids with letter sounds and small words. She used a slinky to represent slow sounds and short sounds and had the kids use imaginary slinkys to follow along. The children really enjoyed doing this and thought it was a good idea because it actively involved the children.
11/21 Black Lake Today was different in the classroom after recess the children worked on their customs for the Thanksgiving presentation. I cut out feathers for the children's turkey tails. I sat their and spoke with Mrs. Mould about the presentation. She made a comment about this being how it used to be and I asked her about it and she commented how their used to be more presentations in the classroom but that was changing for more reading programs. This made me think about when we got together into groups to discuss what we were observing. The group I was in focused a lot on the reading programs in schools.
11/22 Littlerock Curriculum- chaos and I loved it
11/25 Grant I have been having a difficult time writing this grant for Home Depot. I am not sure if it is because I have only been at Roosevelt Dreams Garden twice or because I have never written a grant before. Beth has been wonderful for support but I still don't confident in what I have written so far.
11/28 Grant Worked on the drawing that needs to be included the with the grant and had photos developed. Also worked on the Project Overview that needs to be included
