Arts, Environment and the Child: Walking the Wheel of the Seasons

Garden Project

Step 1

My garden site is located in a 12X12 plot in my backyard.  I was delighted to have this assignment because for the past two years I have been contemplating what to do with it.  This plot has been sitting idle- calling, begging, pleading for attention.  I really want to get out there and get my hands dirty, so now here’s my chance.  This will also be a great opportunity to have Ryan by my side in the garden.  I can’t wait to get started!

Site Description:

Size:  The plot is 12X12.

Shape: Square

Topography:   The bed is raised about 4".  The surface is flat.

Slope:

Exposure: This plot receives about 6-7 hours of sun each day.  No obstructions such as, trees or buildings blocking direct light to any part of the garden.

Soil Characteristics:  The soil color is dark black and brown.  When you pick it up, the soil crumbles, but has some lumps.  The soil drains and retains water well.

Evidence of animal activity: There are obvious signs of rabbits.  This last summer and fall a few rabbit burrows were found with babies still in them.

Principle plant species present: The only vegetation visible would be scattered weeds.  This garden has been empty, neglected for some time now.

I have been longing to do something with this site.  In the past I have sat down beside it contemplating what I could do with it.  This class has really inspired and motivated me to take charge.  The plant studies have also got be buzzing with curiosity!
