Arts, Environment and the Child: Walking the Wheel of the Seasons

Project Reflections

Date Place Reflections
10/1/05 Harvest Festival It was a wonderful festival...I did not know that Evergreen had an organic farm! The first thing I did was went into the farm house and enjoyed a presentation about organic farming in South America. There was an awesome slide show and many stories to accompany each picture. Next I went exploring and enjoyed a delicious piece of home made apple pie! Then I went and made a luminarie and enjoyed watching all of the children, they were so happy and excited.
10/05/05 Project Planning I did not have a project until tonight, then was invited to join the Peterson garden project. We plan to meet this Sunday and travel together out to the site.
10/09/05 Peterson Garden This was our first meeting at the Peterson home. We had a lovely afternoon of drinking tea, brainstorming and getting to know each other. We talked about where to put different plants and we are planning an art project for the stepping stones. The Petersons are professional artists and a joy to work with.
10/09/05 Home Marilee Peterson had asked me to research the problem of getting rid of Crab Grass. I found a good organic solution for her.
10/16/05 Peterson Garden It was a soggy wet Sunday and we worked in the garden. I transplanted a Hydrangia and a rose. Then I worked with the team and we planted several wild huckleberry bushes to make a nice natural hedge. After the last muddy tool was washed and put away, we went inside for a nice lunch...and what was on the menu??? Huckleberry salad! YUM :)
10/19/05 Gateway Christian Pre-School Today I met with the director and spent some time learning about the school and the children. We talked about my hours and she asked if I would be interested in a certain art project to present to the children. Of course I said yes!
10/19/05 Shelton Library I did some research for the art project and found several good books. I am starting to get excited!
10/23/05 Peterson Garden Another soggy Sunday...I usually dislike working in the rain but it has been a refreshing experience. It is so typical"Northwest". When I go to the Skokomish Reservation I notice a feeling of being surrounded by something like a mystical history of ancients...the Elders I suppose, who must constantly watch over the land. It's very green, dark and misty, the perfect setting for an active imagination! We proceded to clear out the front of the garden. Merilee guided us through the uprooting of peonys and the general clearing out of old unwanted plants. Lots of digging and raking. Merilee never ceases to amaze me with her knowledge of plants. I would bring her a dirty tangled mass of roots and she knew exactly what it was! We finished our day with some hearty Chantrell Mushroom soup and some smoked salmon in creamcheese on crackers, homemade by Merilee. It was truely an excellent day!
10/24/05 Gateway Christian Pre-School I arrived at the school early and spent some time with the director. We discussed issues concerning the children and I also helped her with a small filing project. Then I went and sat with the children. We read a book called "An Old Lady Who Ate a Fly" and the kids really enjoyed that. Next was a book about Pumpkins. I just sat and visited with the kids for awhile. They call me "Teacher Marlene" (I am not feeling very worthy of the title, but it is kind of cute when they call me that!) It is a great group of children.
10/28/05 Gateway Christian Pre-School Spent the morning with the children...trying to just observe, but the kids wanted me to fully engage with them. We colored and read books. The kids are really well behaved.

Another day with the kids...they run me ragged in just a few hours! They are so eager to learn and to "tell their story."
11/07/05 Gateway Christian Pre-School

Today was presentation day...yikes! It actually went really good. I taught a lesson about how to wake up seeds. We planted some Fava beans in paper cups. It was a sucess as the kids were very excited and wanted to find more to plant!

11/18/05 Peterson garden Went to the Petersons to work in garden. It was a beautiful sunny day. I was so glad to have the opportunity to be out in the sun. We got a lot done...we made some cement stepping stones, we leveled out her pathway. We planted almost anything that was left in pots. Then we went inside for some great oyster soup!
