Project Personal Ad

About Me:
Hey,
It's Jess. I'm an individual who is short and sweet. I am an extremely serious, motivated, passionate, and supportive person and my project this winter quarter is possibly one of the most important tasks during my Undergrad career so far. I'm not trying to scare anybody, but I'm just letting you the significance and seriousness that for me this project has.

Project Idea:
During winter quarter I will be researching how new medical technologies are treating disability as a form of eugenics within the medical field. I will go on to study how power institiutions and dynamics limit disability by making it even more disabling for individuals who have them. My hope is to deconstruct any assumptions and stereotypes that people may or may not have about disability. I also, want to combat the medical system's practices and say, "Hey look just because someone has disability does not mean they are incapable of living life." I will show how having a disability is empowering and not as disabling as people might believe it to be. I will also be looking at identity and disability together. I'll be doing this by writing a paper and through performance.

Questions I might be working with:
Who constitiute what type of body is worth keeping in the world? What would that body look like? What body would not qualify, and why? What is the importance of having diverse bodies within a community? WHat are the differences and similarities of full able-bodied individuals compared to non fully able bodied individuals?

Who I'm looking for:
Quite simply I'm looking for people who will be supportive, especially in the perfomance aspect of my project. I'm a pretty big on time person, but if you discuss lateness with me ahead of time I'm reasonable, just do not make it a habit. I would like people who are extremely excited about their projects and have a firm grasp of what they will be doing.

Computer Lab Observation

My companions and I encounter a sign that hangs from a ceiling, which reads “the computer lab”. Alas, we have reached the landing site of our assignment. The lab opens into a wide space filled with boxes that create a circular arena for seating. We situate ourselves in a corner of the room and sit on stiff immobile cushions, which lack the excitement of the movable seats with legs that are paired with the boxes. The environment seems calming, but there is a building tension, and nervousness emanating from some of the beings. Many of the beings move their hands rapidly across a rectangle board with buttons without looking down…then they walk to a tall rectangular machine to recover paper, in doing so they begin to speed up from a walk to a much more uncomfortable and heart-racing pace. However, there are a few beings that make unbelievable loud sounds from their bellies that come up the throats and through the mouth. It is both appealing and obnoxious in such a quiet space. Behind the main area there are other rooms filled with boxes as well, and I wonder what type of beings go in there and how they react differently compared to this particular room? Suddenly my pondering is disturbed by a male-being loudly conversing with an odd speaker box object placed against the side of his head and I am glad it is time to leave.
