Assignment Descriptions

Projects in Visual Arts Professions
Spring 2009

Major Assignments

Your Personal Project: Project Proposal and updates in odd-numbered weeks. You will also share progress on your project and receive feedback from your peers three times during the quarter. More opportunities will be available if you wish. You will also meet with your professor periodically to discuss your project.

Project Presentations/Critiques: If your project is an art project, there will be critique sessions. If a critique session is not appropriate for your project, then you will report to the group on the progress of your project and elicit feedback from your peers.

Exhibition Review: a three-page exhibition review of a museum or gallery exhibition that you go to see this quarter.

Art Profession Presentation: an 8-10 minute PowerPoint presentation about an art-related profession, including information about training and education, projected job growth, career paths, typical income.

Arts Organization Presentation: a 5 minute PowerPoint presentation about an arts organization that operates in this region.

Grant-writing Practice: Find a grant program relevant to your art interests and complete the grant application. This can be a grant that you are actually eligible for, or it can be a “fantasy” grant. There will be many kinds of grants that students are not eligible to apply for. This is an opportunity to gain experience in writing for grants and receive feedback from your faculty about your practice application.

Class-Reading: Find a PDF journal article in your interest area that you think is valuable for your classmates to read. You will find this article through the library’s JSTOR database (or similar database). Look for an article about 8-12 pages long. These will provide the majority of our shared seminar readings. In the assigned week, you will post your PDF reading to the program website so that other students can read it for seminar.

Personal Reading List: Maintain a list of readings relevant to your project and various presentations. This will be an annotated bibliography format.

This is very cool and I value the interactive nature of incorporating online posting as a venue for learning. This is awesome!

I have been looking for a program that will encompass every aspect of study I wish to do this quarter. This is an awesome class for those narrowing down their visions of professionalism. Excited!
