A book with a variety of consumer agenda points. This book stated why people buy certain products. This had some to say about cigarette advertising. A good note about female consumption in general.

Barthel, Diane L. Putting on Appearances: gender and Advertising. Philadelphia. Temple University, 1988.

This book pertained to gender roles within advertising. There were specific studies done on cigarette advertising on both men and women. Cigarette brands targeting specific genders are discussed within this book.

Reed, Warren, and De Foe, James R. Drinking and Smoking on Television, 1950-1982. Journal of Public Health Policy, Vol. 5, No. 2. Palgrave Macmillan Journals, 1984.

This article included some interesting cultural statistics about cigarette portrayal within media. It demonstrated how cigarette downfall occurred during the shift in societal health awareness.

Craig, Steve. “Torches of Freedom”: Themes of Women’s Liberation in American Cigarette Advertising. 1999.

This paper was written out of the Dept. of Radio, Television and Film at the University of North Texas. It follows the history of cigarette consumerism of woman tracking on the early 1920’s to the 1990’s. It gives a strong overview of the Virginia Slim cigarette brand and their marketing techniques toward women. It also offered my research some statistics on female smokers.

Howells, Richard. Visual Culture. Malden, MA. Blackwell Publishers Inc, 2003.

This book relates television and media to fine art. It includes a variety of information on commercial advertising as well. I was able to use information from this book toward relating art within commercials.

This website offered a small section specified toward my exact research topic. I was able to find out key points within cigarette advertising and research further based off the key points. It had specific information on the Old Gold dancing pack of cigarettes. It also had information on Phillip Morris sponsorship of I Love Lucy.

Kluger, Richard. Ashes To Ashes. New York. Alred a. Knopf, 1996.

This book is basically the bible to cigarette everything. They had a large amount on cigarette advertising in every medium. I used this book the most when gaining the whole understanding of my research topic.

Kurtz, Bruce. Spots. New York. Arts Communications, 1977.

I found this book extremely interesting. It had to do with a great deal of modern art within television commercials. It spoke of visual elements within commercials. It also had interviews with famous television commercial directors. I was able to apply the artistic aspect of this book to my research.

Miles, Robert H. Coffin Nails and Corporate Strategies. New Jersey. Prentice Hall Inc, 1982.

This book dealt with regulation and politics within cigarette advertisement. I was able to gain technical knowledge of  what was allowed in commercials. It added an element of seriousness within my research. It dealt mostly with legalities.

Pollay, Richard W. Exposure of US youth to cigarette television advertising in the 1960’s.

This article dealt with cigarette advertising targeting those under 18 years of age. It showed cigarette brand strategy when marketing to this group. It provided my research with statistics pertaining to the topic. It also informed my research with specific show sponsorship and time slots.

Pollay, Richard W. Promises, Promises: self-regulation of US cigarette broadcast advertising in the 1960’s.

This was another article from Pollay which assisted my research with more policy information within cigarette advertising. And provided my research of male marketing techniques within the Lucky Strike brand.

Pollay, Richard W, Lee. Lee, Jung S. Carter-Whitney, David. Separate, But Not Equal: Racial sementation in cigarette Advertising.

Pollay assisted me quite a bit when researching my topic. His articles provided me with strong statistics. This article in particular pertained to racial marketing. I gained the majority of my knowledge on the subject from this article.

Shields, David LL. Carol, Julia. Balbach, Edith D. McGee Sarah. Hollywood on tobacco: how the entertainment industry understands tobacco portrayal.

This article helped me in the section of my research having to do with Hollywood’s role in cigarette advertising. It provided me with information specific television studios, and sponsorship. It also had a wide variety of quotes from producers and their opinions.

Spigel, Lynn. TV By Design. Chicago, and London. The University of Chicago Press, 2008.

This book also a great deal of information of modern art within advertising. It also had specific information on Thomas Hart Benton a designer for Lucky Strike ad. I used the book also to understand the importance of moderating how much art is placed within commercials.
