Program Description

This interdisciplinary study-abroad program focuses on Chinese learning and an introduction to Taiwan, listed by Lonely Planet as one of Asia’s most diverse destinations. We will travel to the beautiful tropical island, one of the four Asian Tigers, to participate in an immersion program at two universities in Taiwan. The university experience in the city of Taipei (the capital of the Republic of China), and Tainan (a historical yet modern technology gem) will offer Chinese language studies, economic development updates,  and hands on cultural experience with painting, calligraphy, Kung Fu, and folk arts.

Culture competency is an essential skill for those interested in international trade or intercultural communication. We will learn about Taiwan’s investment in latest information technology, improved sustainable agriculture and ecological development, which made Taiwan an international trading powerhouse with impressive foreign exchange reserve.

Taiwan embraces its diverse ethnic culture and religions. Expect to experience Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, indigenous and folk faiths, and Christianity while taking notes about the various ethnic groups represented here. In addition, students will visit a variety of geological landscapes, tour local socially responsible companies and businesses, green industrial parks, as well as experience Taiwan’s diverse ecosystems. There will be guided tours to the National Palace Museum, , as well as visits to historical sites. Taste authentic Taiwanese and Chinese cuisine as well as local snack food at night markets.

During the first session of the summer, students will travel with the class for a three week study trip. All will be encouraged to document the trip and prepare a written report. For those who choose 12 credit option for the full session, you can continue the learning through seminars, film viewing & discussions, and documentary making in the second session. Additional credits will be awarded for a portfolio that includes a video and/or photo blog documentary from the study trip. All students are required to write a self-evaluation for the instructor. Enroll for eight credits for first session only, or 12 credits for full session.

The specifics of the travel program are proposed as listed under the schedule link. Please check with the faculty for updates and details.

Online supplementary materials available through program website.

See covenant under program’s covenant link.

Program Activities:

The study trip will begin with our group flying to Taipei, Taiwan. We will study and visit the Chinese Culture University first and then National University Of Tainan. While study in Taipei, we will visit the National Palace Museum and Taipei 101, and participate in language and cultural workshops. You will have some free time in evening or weekends to do other culture learning activities, visit local communities, and/or to make your documentary.

See Schedule link for the full study and travel plan in Tainan and other cities as program travel activities.

Program Cost:

Study abroad program fees total approximately $3000, including international airfare. This includes $1500 to $1700 in land travel, covering university study fees, most meals, lodging (university housing and hotel stays, double occupancy), transportation (train and bus travel within Taiwan) and admissions to scenic sights during the trip.

International Air travel: from USA to Taipei, Taiwan and from Taipei back to the States:   $1100 to 1500 and up, although lower rate may be achieved with early purchase. Participants are expected to obtain your own international air ticket. You are encouraged to secure such flight arrangement asap as price may rise without notice. Please contact the faculty immediately to obtain travel plan.

“Any-Reason” Travel Cancellation Insurance is highly recommended by the program faculty, as it is always possible for plans to change, for a variety of reasons.  While TESC offers no official endorsements, this kind of insurance can be obtained here.  When purchasing travel insurance, you should read the fine print of the insurance policy, to be sure that you will be adequately covered.  TESC assumes no responsibility for any individual’s insurance arrangements. Insurance while study and travel in Taiwan will be provided by the Chinese universities and travel agency.

(Program fees do not include personal expenses or tips to travel guide and driver. Single occupancy also requires extra. )

Total:  Program fees & TESC tuition for 8 credits 1st session or 12 credits full session. Use CRN 40015 for 8 credit first session or 40016 for 12 credits. Students wishing to pursue further research and reflection upon their return to Evergreen after our travels are encouraged to continue for second session for continuous studies. This travel program is an incredible chance for students. Aside from the cultural learning, the opportunity to explore Taipei is already a big plus! Students who can join this program are lucky.
