Introduction

As one of the oldest traditions of all time, storytelling has found surprising popularity and criminal acclaim in the digital world. By definition, digital stories are short narratives that combine the art of telling stories with multimedia objects such as images, audio, and video. In the words of Daniel Meadows, they are 'short, personal multimedia tales told from the heart" [1]. The term "Digital Storytelling" was first used in the 1980's by Dana Atchley who used digital technologies in multimedia storytelling performances. Since then, it has gained popularity as an educational tool and has "been employed in various areas including K-12 education, higher education, health care, aging, community action, and more" [2].
Digital stories use multimedia, emphasizing the visual and de-emphasizing the text. Like storytelling itself, Digital Stories focus on the aural and visual experiences of communication.
Although executed in incredibly similar mediums, with essentially all of the same stylistic elements, digital storytelling and Born-Digital Poetry have been met with very different amounts of acclaim. As narrative pieces, digital stories are more successful at conveying a message and as a spoken tradition the aural elements of the medium are better applied.

Digital Storytelling v. Classic Storytelling

"Storytellers modify the story every time it is told, emphasizing various aspects depending on the audience or, indeed, the mood of the storyteller. Details may be added, expounded upon, or deleted. Such an organic approach is not available to the digital storyteller. Once the words are committed to a digital format and shared in the digital area, they become static" [3]

Center for Digital Storytelling

Originally founded in 1994 by Dana Atchley, Joe Lambert, and Nina Mullen. Originally called San Francisco Digital Media Center. "The CDS served as the early catalyst behind the digital storytelling phenomenon and continues today in that capacity". CDS Website

Digital Storytelling and Social Education Efforts

Digital Storytelling has been used by various organizations and groups around the world as a means to share untold stories. Silence Speaks Project for instance shares the stories of survivors of domestic violence. "Public health advocates created digital stories addressing maternal depression in the Cambodian population of a community" (Rossiter).
