- Description

When a woman comes to write a novel, she will find that she is permanently wishing to alter their established values—to make serious what apears to be insignificant to a man, and trivial what appears to him unimportant--Virginia Woolf
What sorts of issues are important to American women writers? What sorts of issues are absent there? What differences do race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation make to the issues they present? Are women's writings different from men's? We will read novels and short stories by American women from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries to begin to answer these questions. We will read Morrison , Paradise ; Robinson, Housekeeping; and short stories selected from Cather, Welty, Plath, Paley, Jhabvala, O'connor, Gilchrist, Tan, and others.
