Irish Language and Song

Summer 2014 quarter

Taught by

ethnomusicology

This course is an introduction to the Irish-Gaelic language through conversation, poetry, and songs (using the natural singing voice). At the end of the class, students will be able to engage in culturally appropriate small talk and sing more than a dozen songs in Irish. We will spend the first half of each meeting working on conversation and grammar, and the second half learning traditional songs in Irish that reflect aspects of what we have just learned. No previous language or singing skills necessary, and no one ever sings alone! Each class will include a break for tea, treats, and a chance to practice what you have learned.
