Mathematics for Elementary and Middle School Teachers

Summer 2014 quarter

Taught by

mathematics teacher education

Elementary school mathematics is no longer considered a collection of computational tools, but rather a rich body of intellectual content, emphasizing understanding, reasoning, and communication. Teaching this content requires a profound and specialized understanding of elementary mathematics. During the quarter, you will develop mathematical thinking skills such as the ability to formulate mathematical conjectures and construct solutions using logical reasoning; correctly write mathematical solutions and justify reasoning; clearly communicate your mathematical thinking in writing and verbally; work cooperatively with others; and examine and understand the development of mathematical concepts across grade levels in the Common Core State Standards. Activities in the program include weekly mathematics homework sets, analysis of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, online discussions, and 2-3 seminar sessions. This class meets the eligibility requirements for the Master in Teaching program at The Evergreen State College for elementary education.
