Introduction to Electronics in Music (I, II, III)
Fall 2014, Winter 2015 and Spring 2015 quarters
Taught by
Students in this year-long course will be introduced to the creative application of music technology from the perspective of the composer. Students will complete two compositions per quarter, developing technical skills along the way. Listening and reading taken from the early pioneers of electronic music will guide and contextualize our creative work. In the fall quarter, students will work almost exclusively in the analog domain, using mixers, tape machines, hardware effects, and analog synthesizers as their primary tools. In winter quarter, we will shift our focus to the possibilities presented by digital audio editing tools and MIDI. Students will continue to work in the digital domain in the spring quarter, further developing their skills with software synthesizers, samplers and digital effects.
