INTERIM REPORT

For our project we are observing and researching the planetary features of the moon, as well as observing and recording the phases of the moon.   We are also exploring the effect the gravitational force from the moon has on local oceanic tides.  We are attempting to show a correlation between the phases of the moon and the behaviors of animals, including humans.  For the cultural aspect of our project, we will use historical and contemporary folklore to see the ways the moon influences the lives of Native Americans.

The bulk of the work done on our project has been mostly an individual effort by each research partner.   That includes research online and in libraries, with each partner concentrating on her specific topic:  Jennifer is researching ocean tides and geological features seen from Earth; and Roxanne researching information on behaviors of animals and humans and phases of the moon.  We have both been researching the planetary features of the moon, including, lunar domes, mare, terra, and craters.   Individually we observe the moon every night, when visible at that time, through naked eye, and chart its position in the sky, rising and setting times, geography, and phases.  At our twice-weekly meeting, we share our findings, and collaboratively work on our web page.

Roxanne has been compiling stories about the moon from the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma, a Plains tribe with whom Roxanne has constant communication with.  It has more significance to our project to concentrate on this particular tribe being that Roxanne is a current member.   This means we will have reliable sources for our moon stories, as well as out information.

Currently, we are sorting through the efforts of our research, cross-referencing sources, and narrowing our focus.  We will be meeting more often now that the bulk of our research is done.  We will teach each other what we have learned, and discuss any uncertain topics we have discovered.  We are continuing our nightly observations of the moon, and will be using binoculars by the end of this week.  We will also be meeting soon to update and improve our web page.  We will communicate with Zita after our meetings to inform her of our progress.

Our goal from completing this project is to have a greater knowledge of the moon, so as to share with others the facts about this common point of wonder.  We also hope to understand in depth certain phenomena of the moon, including the geology and other planetary features of the moon.  We want to understand the phases of the moon, and the correlation between certain events on Earth, like oceanic tides, and the behavior changes of animals.
