World War II came at an important

time for American women. Many doors

had been opened during WWI, then

slammed just as quickly over the course

of the Great Depression. They needed

another chance to prove themselves in

the work atmospheres that were usually

set aside for men.

The attack on Pearl Harbor turned

the job pool inside out. America

found itself thrust into another global

war. Women were needed in the

workplace. They seized the opportunity

to fight forcefully the old battle for

equal rights.

The Northwest offered many job

prospects, especially for white females.

Over fifteen million people moved

during the war. Scores of them headed

for the northern Pacific coast. Defense

industry jobs, such as shipyards and

airplane manufacturers abounded here.
