World War II came at an important time for American women. Many doors had been opened during WWI, then slammed just as quickly over the course of the Great Depression. They needed another chance to prove themselves in the work atmospheres that were usually set aside for men.

The attack on Pearl Harbor turned the job pool inside out. America found itself thrust into another global war. Women were needed in the workplace. They seized the opportunity to fight forcefully the old battle for equal rights.
The Northwest offered many job prospects, especially for white females. Over fifteen million people moved during the war. Scores of them headed for the northern Pacific coast. Defense industry jobs, such as shipyards and airplane manufacturers abounded here.
