We will work together in this learning community with the understanding that each of us has a responsibility to ourselves and to the community for making this a successful program.
By enrolling, students agree to the following:
- Learning French requires a major commitment of both time and energy and I am willing to make that commitment to the best of my abilities. further, I recognize that the nature of intellectual development requires the honest and clear expression of thoughts and feelings, the tolerance of diverse ideas and perceptions, and the willingness to elaborate on one's vision.
- I will read all assigned texts with care by the due date, attend all scheduled activites on time, and complete all written assignments on time. I understand that if I do not submit my work on time, I risk losing credit. If I have lost credit, I will jeopardize my chances of going on the field study to France.
- I will be an active, collaborative, and supportive member of the learning community and maintain civility in all interactions.
- I will not plagiarize. I will attribute all sources for text, images, and ideas drawn from others. I understand that the faculty view the use of computer translators to produce assignments in langueage classes as a form of plagiarism. Plagiarism will result in dismissal from the program and no credit for the quarter.
- I understand that creidt is not the same thing as evaluation. To receive credit in the program Paris, Dakar, Fort de France, I must meet the essential requirements and standards only. This means completing all required work on time, attending regularly, and participating actively in scheduled activites. Absences will be possible as follows: I may miss up to two lecture/workshop periods, two language classes, on conversation class, and one film without receiving reduced credit. Evaluations, on the other hand, are narratives of student learning based on performance in academic work. I must submit a self evaluation and faculty evaluation at the end of each quarter and my faculty sponsor (my seminar leader) will write an evaluation of my work each quarter.
- In learning communities, conflicts sometimes arise. I will try first to resolve the conflict by speaking directly to the person with whom I am in comflict as soon as possible. If this is not possible, I will contact my faculty sponsor (my seminar leader) for advice on mediation. If my conflict is with my faculty sponsor, and I do not feel comfortable speaking with her, I may speak with Tom Womeldorff, the Academic Dean assigned to our program, who will mediate.
- I understand that for the spring field trip to France there will be a separate covenant, which I will receive before placing a deposit for the trip. I understand that to be eligible for the field study, I need to have made satisfactory progress in all of my studies and that the faculty have the right to determine who makes the trip.
Faculty agree to do their designated work and make all decisions related to the program jointly, and to be good colleagues.
