Work and the Human Condition

Coming in Winter and Spring...

Winter Quarter’s work will move to a study of ideas about work and working as they evolved during the Industrial Revolution and continue to the present. We’ll study Marx and Adam Smith, Walden, Ruskin, Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, The Human Condition , Checkov’s Uncle Vanya and other readings.

During Spring Quarter, students will read contemporary ideas about the values and challenges of work and working. They will also learn from people about the work they do, interviewing and taking oral histories. They will document work and working through photography and writing. Martin Kane, the college photographer, will be teaching in the program during the spring.
