This course will look at the relationship between gender and communication in both public and private spheres. We will analyze the social construction of gendered talk in interpersonal relationships, in the workplace, in education, and in the media.
During the quarter we will study feminist rhetorical theory and contemporary gender theory. Students will be asked to analyze gender hierarchies in relation to other social hierarchies such as race, class, physical ability, and sexual orientation. We will practicing and reflect on our communication skills with a goal of improving male/female interactions and empowering all participants to become more effective speakers and listeners.
This course satisfies communication credit for selected Masters in Teaching endorsement areas.
