WORKING WITH WATER AND COLOR: EMPHASIS ON COLOR MIXING
We chose this project for two reasons:
- As a refresher course and enhancement to the project we carried out last quarter. (Last quarter was the project of writing their names on the photo paper with different colored bingo markers and the book we read to them about mixing colors called White Rabbit's Color Book) and
- To coincide with something our class is centered around this quarter, the element of water.
MATERIALS:
- Paper towels
- Medicine droppers
- Muffin pan
- Water
- Red, blue and yellow food coloring
- Frames made from different colors of card stock
- Scotch Tape
First thing each day, when the children show up for class and after they have put their jackets and backpacks in their assigned cubbies, each of the 4 classroom tables is set up with a different activity. Lacey showed up early to prepare our assigned table for our project by adding water to 6 wells of the muffin pan and adding a few drops of red in two, blue in two more and yellow in the last two. I was blessed with the kindness of Rite-Aid, who graciously donated 6 medicine droppers for our project. The droppers were set, one inside each well of color. While the kids were working on their other projects or playing games, puzzles or reading elsewhere in the room, we called them over 3-4 at a time and started them on their way to learning more about color mixing. Since they learned about color mixing only from the story they heard last quarter, this was their first attempt at trying what they learned.
