Arts, Environment and the Child: Walking the Wheel of the Seasons

Curriculum Work

Hats Off!
Constructing hats from paper & natural materials

Summary:
This creative arts and craft project can be introduced with a brief history of hat-making, or millinery. It could also be jump-started by a nature walk in order to collect materials for the project. Students should first measure the circumference of their head with a piece of string. After they measure the string, they are to glue two pieces of construction paper together that equals their head circumference. The hats can be embellished with colored and/or patterned paper, sequins and glitter, and leaves, twigs, berries, and other natural materials. Students should be encouraged to create a hat that expresses their interests and individuality.
