Arts, Environment and the Child: Walking the Wheel of the Seasons

Garden

I have yard in the front of my house, very vulnerable to the street, but very sunny, with way overgrown lavender, and some unknowns. I also have yard in the back of my house, very shady, soon to be shadier due to leaves to come out on deciduous trees which will block out hours of sun, lots of lots of lots of ivy, and a shed smack dab in the middle of the yard...I do not own a camera, so here are my rough sketches:

This is a sketch of the right side (facing out from the house) of the front yard, as is:

Natalie's boyfriend says, and from pics on google it seems right, that the stem plant there is a Euphorbia, and the little bit there seems to be Santolina chamaecyparissus - Lavendar cotton..The Santolina is growing like crazy, and I've since given it a hefty trim. In the white space there is just grass and moss. the rest is previously used dirt.

Days later: It turns out that there is a small magnolia twig thingy budding, that I will move to another corner than where it is now, and also, this little shrub thing growing in the crook of the planted dirt area is called a Valley Valentine Japanese Andromeda, and I've seen one in bloom since, and it's really cool, but really small right now. There are also all kinds of lilies and stuff showing up.

Above is a sketch facing out from my front door, with some of my ideas for the future: Lemon or Bee balm and Catnip for the borders on either sides of the path, wildflowers in the empty space, Comfrey, Nettles, Marjoram maybe Garlic and Cilantro for the 'dirt'. I'd also like some Nasturtiums in the front, maybe some Wormwood, maybe Red-Osier Dogwood...I'll have to see what comes up. There is a small shrub? called ...(to be filled in) It's growing in the SW curve of the dirt.

This is a sketch of the backyard as is, don't know what any of the shrubs are, and if any of them are actually trees...

And this is my fantasy for a shady fragrant night time garden in the back...might put in some Honeysuckle, some Periwinkle, maybe Jasnim, Forget-Me-Nots, American Red Columbine...I'm still researching shady and fragrant...

I don't plan to do too much ripping out, just trimming, and watching, and a bit of planting.
