[edit] Problem

Some projects are simply unmanageable. No matter how they're pursued, progress seems unattainable. This also happens when project team members can't agree on goals, tactics, processes or philosophy.

[edit] Context

A project may be too broad to achieve its stated goal.

[edit] Discussion

An unmanageable project is likely to be the result of a lack of problem focus.

We need to talk about how to apply this pattern. There should be techniques that people can apply that will help determine a sharper project focus.

Look at a project and attempt to summarize it in one or two sentences. If this is not possible, then chances are your project is too broad.

Applying this pattern should not be considered as "watering down" the project but rather as "focusing" the project into a singular achievable goal.

[edit] Solution

Continually evaluate the progress of a project and identify unclear goals, "fuzzy" math, or loose ends that may be diluting the projects potency. If you can't summarize the project in one or two sentences it's probably too unfocused.
