[edit] Problem

The environment (physical, emotional, etc.) plays a large role in people's ability to work effectively on their project. Sometimes this is obvious, when, for example, your roommate insists on watching television all day in a darkened room. More often, the influence of the environment is not always obvious.

[edit] Context

  • You are trying to get some work done, and your roommate's heavy metal band is practicing in your living room.
  • It's really nice outside, and there is too much glare on your monitor, and you really want to go outside.

[edit] Discussion

Think about characteristics that will make up a work environment that encourages productivity: quiet space, few external distractions, room to breathe, proper lighting. Each day you work on your project, try to take note of when you're feeling productive, when you're not feeling productive, and how that relates to the environment you are in. Experiment with different environments until you find a location, noise level, privacy level, etc. that works for you.

[edit] Solution

Many people believe that if your working environment is unsatisfactory you have only two options. 1) find another place to work. or 2) learn to live with it.

The truth is that the third option — changing the environment — is often the best solution.
