[edit] Problem

Working at home gives you access to tempting video games and other distractions. Moreover, the space, lighting, and functionality that is needed for a project is often inadequate at home. Furthermore, using your home or other places for your project wastes energy. You need a space that is dedicated to your craft.

[edit] Context

You are considering functionality in building a painting studio.

[edit] Discussion

Studios are designed to provide support for specific types of projects.

For example, studios for painting require adequate lighting using a combination of natural and electric light. For natural lighting ideally you would want overhead and wall windows. The ability to open the windows would increase ventilation and reduce the need for air conditioning or venting systems, reducing operating costs. There should be wall windows installed facing south to take advantage of direct sunlight for brighter light and heating in the winter. Using energy saving design aspects would further reduce costs. Good consideration should be given to overheating in the summer so I would have plenty of trees close to the building to provide shade. Total window space for the studio would be no less than fifty percent of the total floor space. The artificial lighting would be comprised of a combination overhead track lighting and floor lamps. Lamps would be used to cut out any shadows produced by the main overhead lights. The shape of the room should be some sort of rectangle compared to a circle or shapes with sharp angles. This will maximize window, wall and floor space creating a balanced, functional space. The box like shape is also quicker, easier, and cheaper to construct. The long sides of the rectangle should be at least one hundred and fifty percent the length of the shortest sides to give the artist space for storage and to view art from a distance if needed. The use of a square shape would also suffice as long as it’s large enough to solve the problem of space and the work environment. Open space in the studio should be allotted for large projects and future work areas.

Doors would need to be extra wide or sliding garage doors to solve the problem of moving large art pieces that may start small but ending up being very large.

This describes a functional painting studio in Olympia but can be applied in some aspects to other needs.

[edit] Solution

Studios provide space and other support for projects. Studios can be large or small, permanent or temporary, but they need to be designed to support the specifics of the project.
