[edit] Problem

How the average student can resist the soul crushing pressure of Self-Doubt. A person can doubt themselves and their work at any time resulting in lack of motivation, disillusionment and project abandonment. This all however, can be avoided.

[edit] Context

People who lose motivation while in the midst of a project due to self doubt either self inflicted or through critique. Finding time to do the things we want. We only have like 80 years to do it all.

[edit] Forces

The forces involved in Self-Doubt have to do with inspiration, self opinion, critics review, and general motivation.

[edit] Discussion

Motivation can be hindered by Self-Doubt easily. Whether it’s receiving a poor review of your work in progress, you realizing that your project will not be what you envisioned or you simply become disillusioned with the project. All these things can bring a production to a halt. So how does one combat this plague? You can either give a blind eye to the critics or perhaps alter your project to improve upon its sighted flaws. You can try and force yourself to push your way through, despite your new lack of motivation. Or you can look else where for inspiration and perhaps reinvent your project into something new, while not abandoning the entire thing. Inspiration can be found in films, seminars, walking outside, listening to music, reading a book or magazine or simply watching TV. Finding biographies of people who have done similar projects can also be inspiring and give you insight into how to fix what’s wrong with your project or avoid costly mistakes that could come up. The most important thing to do is finish the project, otherwise all the time you’ve spent thus far has been wasted and you have no product other than a learning experience. Just remember when you have the finished product in your hand, even if it’s not what you originally envisioned it is something you can look back on and now that you made an accomplishment.

UPDATE Sometimes it is best to ignore all outside forces, in an effort to do what is important to you without being affected by the critical eye of others. I have combated my naivety during a film shoot by admitting to myself that I have room to grow, and properly organizing for it through research.

[edit] Solution

The solution is of course to either apply your self or become re-inspired. How you attempt to do this is up to you, but it’s important to remember never to truly give up and to finish the project in one form or another. It's better to burn out than to fade away! Sometimes biting the bullet and working on a small portion of the project can help inspire one to work more. If the lack of motivation is caused by a daunting amount of work, divide it into smaller pieces.
