Pattern: Planning

Problem: projects fail without proper planning

Discussion: planning is a complicated task. Each project requires a different plan, and there's no way to be sure you're using the right plan until, you have already run the risk of the project failing. To reduce the risk of failing proper planning is needed, this could mean sitting down with the people you are doing the project with and brainstorming ideas. It could mean complex charts and graphs, it could mean one sheet of paper covered in chicken scratch that you refer to when you forget what you should be doing. To make it even harder to know what right planning is different kinds of planning work for different people. If three people are given the same project. It is likely that the plans of the three people will look different from each other. Even if all three plans work perfectly well. Also, just because one person makes a good plan doesn't mean that person can transfer that plant to another person who doesn't understand it or whose natural inclination is to use a different planning method.

Solution: All but the simplest of projects need some kind of plan. Most projects benefit from some kind of plane. As was discussed above, there are lots of ways to plan. And planning takes practice, if you have no experience planning and need to work on a project that is large enough to require planning it makes sense to get a book on planning and review different methods and tell you find one that you think will help. In a lot of cases, just having thought about planning will dramatically improve likelihood of success.
