[edit] Tools in Creativity

  • Problems

Can computers help us understand creativity? Can computers appear to be creative? Can computers recognize creativity? Can computers create?

  • Context

Independent films are generally associated with creativity. The idea is that an “indy” throws the Hollywood concept of perfection out the window and builds a non-linear chain of events that is supposedly closer to an actual human perception. But whether or not the film is based off a tried-and-true model designed to make money, it is still the creation of a machine even with a human at the helm. There is a certain romanticism associated with the neutral pacifism a camera offers. But what is the role of the artist in relation to the machine he operates? Can a camera create, or is it the human?

  • Discussion

If somebody models a computer program after the human thought process with every spike, whim, and flaw left intact, is it the same as an actual human having actual thoughts? What is creativity? Can it be reduced to simply a mechanism? The dictionary defines creativity as the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, or patterns. Then, can a computer program that generates random numbers be labeled creative? If creativity is deviating from the norm, is there a difference between randomness and creativity?

A computer is not an especially visual machine. If a human were to program a randomized visual fractal program, the computer has no special ability to judge what it has created. A system of judgment must be created by humans, and programmed into the computer. In a sense the computer is not a machine at all. It is a collection of human ideas and concepts ordered in a controlled environment. The computer can be employed with any task, but in order to receive analysis, a human must make a judgment call. It is better to look to how the computer may approach the nature of human thought, rather than attempt to fix it with brilliant artificial intelligence.

UPDATE One of the problems I faced in my project was that my digital palmcorder was lacking in quality, compared to more expensive alternatives. Three-chip or high-definition cameras can replicate what an eye sees with much greater clarity and resolution. A consumer-level camera tends to look pixelated or grainy. The fact that a human can process this inferiority removes the romanticized idea of a camera that "creates" on its own.

  • Solution

Although computers reflect humans quite accurately, creativity is a process through which humans must be involved, as it is an opinion.
