"It finally dawned on me that in this place that we had set aside to nurture culture and study its workings, culture didn't work." (13)

This phrase really stuck out to me, simply because of its verbal contradiction. It doesn't make sense that a place specifically designed to make culture grow and expand would squelch it so much, but the truth is there are several places just like that. The student is supposed to gain control and authority over a subject, but the passion and love for the subject that coems with it doesn't show up. Trying to force someone to be passionate about something never works; it's something most everyone knows but no one says out loud.
Hickey describes lectures he'd been to before where the speaker had "mastered" a subject, but had no love for it. To me, mastery isn't complete if you have no passion for the thing itself. It's like trying to take lecture notes while listening to someone list fact after fact but adds nothing to it, just the steady monotonous drone of some speaker who has knowledge of the subject but doesn't really give a damn about it past his/her lecture. The question i have, is whether someone can truly be considered a "master" of the subject if they have no love for the subject itself.
