" Imagine a museum of blank canvasses.... each contains, before a brush is laid on it, assumptions implicit in the art of its era." p.35
This quote was the most significant to me in this reading. It really puts forth the question: Can you really exclude a piece of art from the outside world with any relative frame? I agree the point of the gallery is to put the audience into a unique state of mind so you can take in only the art that is presented, but I feel that this is impossible due to the fact that the era that the art is being presented in has a huge impact on the expectations and in turn extremely affecting the emotions of the viewer. The example given in the book says to take a few blank canvasses, all in the same frame, from different eras and put the time period as the titles and the audience will already have a preconcieved notion as to what should be put on that canvas. I feel by creating these frames you are relatively confining the concepts of the piece but this should be done in a matter that is up to the artist. Who do you want to speak to?
In the Extracts From Camera Lucida, the constant battle between photographer and subject is in focus, no pun intended. Photographs have the skill to transcend time and therefore evolve with the evolution of perception. Barthes talks about how whenever a picture is taken of him, after seeing the image he is constantly trying to replicate that emotion he sees in the photo not what he was feeling at the time. This is such a weird thing. Trying to replicate how you think you are feeling in a picture of yourself? Crazy!!! This medium is different from cinema because it is stagnant and shows one split second in time and one emotion as cinema can portray this much more significantly. Photography leaves me with more frustration in trying to find feeling than any other medium. Arrrrrgghhh.
