Weekly Papers (due each week at Friday Seminar): Every week, students will submit a Conclusion and Response paper at the Friday seminar meeting. These papers carefully address the reading for the week, and should help you in your preparation for seminar. Each paper should be no more than 4 single-space pages. As the papers are an important part of preparation for seminar, no late papers will be accepted except under dire circumstances. Weekly Conclusion and Response Papers: Full Description Fall Quarter PaperWorking individually or in small groups, students will write and present one research project at the end of the quarter. This project will address a specific colonial situation, such as the British in Jamaica. There will be substantial time reserved within the program for assisted research. Completed projects will be presented in weeks 9 and 10 -- multimedia presentations are ok, and encouraged. Fall Quarter Paper: Full Description Film IntroductionA group presentation on a film's context. Working in groups, students will make a 20-30 minute presentation on one of the films that we will be watching. They will need to research background material – including the background of the director and the history and geography of material within the film itself. The groups will also read at least two film reviews and facilitate the class discussion. Try to choose a film that you will be presenting and approach it in a way that looks interesting to you, and present your discussion in a way that will engage the class. Feel free to use the chalkboard or to bring in any xeroxed material, maps, or pictures that may be pertinent to your presentation.
