Speed is the rate of change of distance over time.

speed = \frac{distance}{time}

You are familiar with speeds such as 25 miles per hour, so you can probably understand speeds like 10 meters per second.

There are three ways you can use the formula for speed:

  1. You should be able to determine the average speed of something if you know how long it took it to go a certain distance.
  2. You should also be able to determine the distance something travels in a certain amount of time if you know its average speed.
  3. And finally, you should be able to predict how long it will take something to travel a certain distance if you know its average speed.
