why are few woman in the fishing fleet

Nicholas Griffes

My View on why few women are commercial fisherman.

There are relatively few commercial fisherwomen in our modern fishing fleet.  My main idea is the idea that woman are the caretakers when men are away but as times change, there number will increase in all parts of our society.  A reason why is a lot of people don’t want to endure the physical and mental stress that is a part of fishing.  It is also said on, average the men have the brawn and the women more of the brains.  But as the book states few do serve.

One of the main obstacles to Woman joining the fishing fleet, is the fact that there is a lot of superstition if you walk under something or do it a different way it is said to be bad luck.  I know that when you throw the hook to pull up the first crab pot and you miss the season will be a bad one.  A great example of this exists in hockey you can only lace up your skate certain way or bad luck comes to you.

Another obstacle is that it is a very male dominated society.  From what I have gathered in the book the type of woman that joins can be considered bull headed and strong willed.  But if the know what to a not do it another way.  They can be just as good as men.  They also have to deal with the fact that the en usually are away from society and a woman can become a toy and it goes down hill from there.

Men tend to be stronger then woman and on deck there is a lot of hauling things around that are in no ones mind light.

In my mind the role in the fleet that the average woman would to great at would be capturing a woman’s ability to handle two things at once would be very useful.

This is my view on why in the US fishing fleet woman are few a far between who take up the life.  But as he years go on there will probably be more and more woman in the fishing fleet.
