[edit] Quotes From Reviews
1947- Frank Luther Mott "The Scarlet Letter totaled 4,000 copies, and gives the impression that it continued to have lively sale. The Ticknor records show that the first printing was of 2,500 copies, that the type was then distributed, and that it took well over a year to sell 6,000 copies." Golden Multitudes: The story of the Best Sellers in the United States.
1950- Warren I.Titus "This late addition to the publisher's Riverside Editions maintains the high standard of the series. The text should appeal to scholars since it is based upon the first edition of the classic and conforms to Hawthorne's own punctuation and usage. Harry Levin's introduction and notes prove useful: they are straightforward and sane with no questionable interpretations to be cloud the students approach." College Composition and Communication. George Peabody College for Teachers
1958- Sam S. Baskett "The Custom House" Introduction to The Scarlet Letter is often brushed aside as an artistic and thematic poor relation of the tale proper, mildly interesting in itself and undeniably there, but having little meaningful connection with the darkly resplandent main body of Hawthorn's masterpiece." Larzer Ziff, "The Ethical Dimensions" (May 1958) LXXIII
1968- John C. Gerber "The Scarlet Letter a novel about wayword Boston churchman. And it comes as no surprise to learn that Church Views denounced the novel, on its appearence, as a "dirty book." Englandwood cliffs, New Jersey:Prentice Hall;Inc 1968
