Week 3 Paper Topic (Group B)
Medieval Christian scholars inherited a rich body of secular Greek texts and religious Judeo-Christian texts. Sometimes these sources were in agreement on key issues; sometimes they contradicted each other. For this essay, consider how medieval scholars approached and reconciled inconsistencies or contradictions between the diverse sources in their intellectual heritage. You are encouraged to select one specific area of conflict between a secular Greek text (e.g. Aristotle’s Physics) and religious Judeo-Christian texts (e.g. The Bible), and explore the substance, context, and implications of this conflict. What does this conflict suggest about the relation between science and religion during the medieval period?
